Make-It Topic: Bells

Here's a Bell
Here's a bell, and here's a bell,
And a great big bell I see.
Shall we ring them?
Yes, we will.
One (ting-a-ling)
Two (ting-a-ling, ting-a-ling)
Three (dong, dong, dong).

Five Little Bells
Five little bells, hanging in a row,
The first one said, "Ring me slow."
The second one said, "Ring me fast."
The third one said, "Ring me last."
The fourth one said, "I'm like a chime."
The fifth one said, "Ring me at Holiday Time."

Holiday Time(Tune: "Row, Row, Row Your Boat")
Ring, ring, ring the bells.
Ring them loud and clear
To tell the children everywhere
That Holiday Time is here.

Two Little Bells
Two little bells for all to see,
Ringing for you and ringing for me.
One rings high, one rings low,
One rings fast and one rings slow.
Two little bells for all to see,
Ringing for you and ringing for me.

My Jingle Bells(Tune: "Jingle Bells")
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way.
Oh, what fun it is to shake
My jingle bells today.
Shake them fast.
Shake them slow.
Shake them loud and clear.
Oh, what fun it is to shake
My jingle bells right here.

Bells
(Give the children bells to ring as you read the following rhyme.)
Jingle bells, cow bells, door bells gold,
Dinner bells, sleigh bells, church bells old,
School bells, fire bells: Ring, ring, ring.
Ding, dong, ding, dong, ding, ding, ding!

Merry Are the Bells
Merry are the bells and merry would they ring.
Merry was myself and merry would I sing
With a merry ding-dong.

Jingle Bells/Casca Beles
Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way!
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh!
Hey! Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way!
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Casca beles, casca beles,
Casca beles hoy es navidad.
Es un dia de a legria y felicidad.
Casca beles, casca beles,
Casca beles hoy es navidad
Es un dia de legria y felicidad.

Imaginative Play:
  • Place a dinner bell in the kitchen center.
  • Set up a "restaurant". Add a bell for the children to ring to call the waiter, when they are ready to order their food.
  • Set up a "bell" store, complete with play money and cash register.
Table Top/Conceptual:
  • Cut a large bell shape out of cardboard or vinyl place mat. Hold punch around the edge of the shape. Provide a shoe lace for lacing the shape.
  • Create a matching game with bells by cutting matching pairs of bell shapes out of wall paper samples, felt or other materials. Place bells face down on a table to play a memory game.
  • Arrange different sizes of real bells by size.
Field Trip:
  • Visit a store, and look at the variety of bells that one can purchase.
Art:
  • Cut a bell shape out of a sponge and use it to make bell prints on paper, with paint.
  • Decorate bell shapes with various collage items.
  • Use bell cookie cutters in play dough.
  • Make bell prints by dipping bell shaped cookie cutters in paint, and then pressing on paper.
Gross Motor:
  • String several jingle bells on a pipe cleaner or narrow ribbon. Twist the pipe cleaner or tie ribbon around each child's angle. Play music and dance to the music.
  • Hang bells from the ceiling or doorway. Take turns going to the different bells and jumping up to touch one to make it ring. Give different directions of how the children could move to get to the bells, i.e. hop, skip or crawl.
  • Place a variety of bells on a child's quit or on a parachute. Have the children sit around the quilt/parachute and lift it several inches off the ground. Sing "Jingle Bells" as you gently move the quilt/parachute about.
  • Provide each child with a bell to ring. Go on a neighborhood walk, ringing the bells as you go.
  • Play hide and seek. Give one child a quiet bell to ring. Have the child hide and then gently ring the bell, while the others try to find him.
  • Hang bells on ride-on vehicles for the children to use.
Science:
  • Place a variety of bells in a basket for the children to explore.
  • Place several kinds of bells on a tray. Have the children close their eyes while you ring a bell. See if the children can identify the bell by its ring.
  • For snack, cut bread into bell shapes and toast it.
  • Discuss the various ways bells are used, i.e. door bells.
